After the start of Israel’s military operation in Gaza in October 2023, tensions along the Israeli-Lebanese border escalated, with daily exchanges of fire between the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Hezbollah fighters.
On Saturday, the IDF announced that Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah was killed in an Israeli airstrike on Beirut, along with several other commanders.
Hezbollah later confirmed Nasrallah's death, stating, "Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah, Secretary-General of Hezbollah, has joined the martyrs, whom he led for more than thirty years."
The airstrike, which targeted Hezbollah's main headquarters in Beirut's Dahiyeh neighborhood on Friday night, destroyed six residential buildings, according to Lebanese media. This follows a series of explosions on September 17 and 18 that killed 37 people and injured over 3,000, with Hezbollah and Lebanese authorities blaming Israel, although the latter has neither confirmed nor denied involvement.

Israeli Ground Operations in Lebanon May Have Already Begun - Reports
US broadcaster ABC News claimed citing US officials that small-scale Israeli ground operations in Lebanon might have already begun.
Small-scale operations or "border movements" in Lebanon with the aim of destroying Lebanese movement Hezbollah's positions right on the border have already begun or will begin soon, the channel said.
The officials told the channel that, apparently, Israel has not yet made a final decision on the ground operation, but is already prepared for it.
According to these officials, the scale of the operation, if it begins, will be limited. The key goal, according to them, will be the return of displaced residents of northern Israel to their homes. However, to achieve this goal, they argue, the elimination of Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah will not be enough.

Nasrallah's Cousin Safieddine May Become His Successor as Hezbollah Leader - Reports
Hashem Safieddine, the cousin of Lebanese movement Hezbollah's deceased leader Hassan Nasrallah, may become his successor, the New York Times reported, citing Israeli officials.
Earlier, Hezbollah confirmed Nasrallah's death as a result of an Israeli airstrike on the southern suburb of Beirut.
Three Israeli officials told the publication that Safieddine was a key player in the movement's political and social work. He was one of the few remaining senior Hezbollah leaders not present at the scene of the attack.
Safieddine, long seen as a potential successor to Nasrallah, could soon be announced as the movement's new secretary-general, the publication said.
Earlier, CNN reported, citing current and former US officials, that Nasrallah's death had sharply increased fears of a full-scale war in the Middle East.
Nasrallah became the movement's secretary general in 1992. Under his leadership, the Shiite movement has increased its influence in Lebanon and expanded its military and political capabilities. Since the 1980s, Hezbollah has been held responsible for dozens of terrorist attacks in various countries targeting citizens of Israel, the United States, France and other countries.

Houthis Claim Attack on Ben Gurion Airport Amid Netanyahu's Return to Israel
Shiite movement Ansar Allah (the Houthis), which rules northern Yemen, said it had attacked Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv with a Palestine-2 missile as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was returning to Israel from the United States.
"The Yemeni Air Force attacked Ben Gurion Airport (Tel Aviv) with a Palestine-2 hypersonic ballistic missile during the arrival of the enemy entity's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu," Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saria told Al-Masirah broadcaster.
Earlier on Saturday, speaking on the occasion of Israel's assassination of Lebanese Shiite movement Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, the Ansar Allah leader said that the hopes of the Jews had been dashed after the assassination of Palestinian martyr Ismail Haniyeh and their hopes would be dashed after the death of Nasrallah as well. The support fronts "will continue and grow despite the efforts of the Israeli enemy, and we will not let down the two dear peoples of Lebanon and Palestine."

Netanyahu: Hezbollah Leader's Assassination Was Necessary for Israeli Success
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in his first public remarks since the elimination of Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah, said Saturday that his removal was a necessary condition for achieving Israel's current goals of returning northern residents to their homes and changing the balance of power in the region.
"The elimination of Nasrallah is a necessary condition for achieving our current goals - the safe return of the residents of the north to their homes and changing the balance of power in the region for years to come," the prime minister was quoted as saying by his office.
The prime minister added that the elimination of the Hezbollah leader would help efforts to free hostages in the Gaza Strip.
Netanyahu said he had concluded earlier in the week that Israeli strikes against the movement's targets in Lebanon in those days were insufficient.
The prime minister also called Nasrallah "terrorist number one" and "the main engine of Iran's axis of evil," adding that Hezbollah had hatched plans to destroy Israel.
"I came to the conclusion at the beginning of the week that the powerful strikes that the IDF [Israel Defense Forces] has inflicted on Hezbollah in recent days, these strikes will not be enough ... For while Nasrallah was alive, he would quickly rebuild Hezbollah's capacity, which we had undermined. So I gave the order - and he is no longer with us," Netanyahu said.

"Hassan Nasrallah and the terrorist group he led, Hezbollah, were responsible for killing hundreds of Americans over a four-decade reign of terror. His death from an Israeli airstrike is a measure of justice for his many victims, including thousands of Americans, Israelis, and Lebanese civilians," Biden said in a statement released by the White House.
